Wisdom Saves Grandparent from Scam

Watch out and warn your family about a scam or identification theft that is happening, especially with the elderly. In Carthage, Missouri a man called a 72 year old grandmother of 13 grandchildren and said he was in trouble.

The man on the other end of the telephone said that he was in a car accident and needed $5,000.00 to get out of the police station located in Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada. She was not sure which grandson this was and asked which grandson it was. The caller responded by having her guess. The grandmother stated the name Jamie and the caller said, “Yeah, it’s Jamie.”

The man pleaded her to wire the money by MoneyGram at Wal-Mart. He then urged her not to call her granddaughter. The man continued on her emotions and it sounded like he was going to cry. He again, told her not to call anyone, because he claimed that he didn’t tell anyone he was coming here.

The grandmother said that after she hung up, her husband, Bill, headed to the bank to the get the money. However, she was smart enough to suspect something and at a least she decided to call the police. The police told her it was a scam. He continued that “They’re calling people from out of the country, and it’s always grandparents.”

A spokesman for the Attorney General said the scammer’s line is a familiar one.“That’s the classic grandparents’ scam.”

Later, the grandmother confirmed that her grandson was indeed at home and safe. She said that she never thought she could be a victim of a phone scam. She “felt so dumb.” She continued that “When they hit you with your grandchildren, you’re going to help them,” she said. “We’d do that for any of them.” As Reported joplinglobe.com

This is why scam work because people fall for the emotional tug on their heart. They want to help their family any way they can. Please talk to your family and especially your grandparents. Tell them this story and help them be aware of the techniques used and help them prevent identity theft or the the theft of their money.
