Summary: How do bail bonds work?
A bond a formal document that gives bail for someone to be released from custody after they have been arrested for a crime. The bail is money and or collateral given as an assurance that someone released from custody will return to all their scheduled court dates. Bail is a form of capital which is deposited or pledged to a court to release the accused from jail.
Some people can afford to post the entire bond amount themselves and others us a bail bond agencies. The use of such an agency allows the person to typically pay a percentage upfront and sign a guarantee and/or post Collateral. After payment is received the bonding company will usually take care of coordinating the posting and release of the person from jail.
If bail is not posted, then the accused is required to stay in jail until all the scheduled court matters are over. This includes the defendant missing work and other essential family and personal matters.
